“The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.” ~~Author Unknown~~
Have you heard about Himalayan rock salt lamps? When seeking out the perfect birthday present for my cousin recently, I encountered them for the first time. Upon looking them up online, here’s what I read:
“Science offers a solid basis for the unanimous claims by lamp owners around the world about the positive effects which salt lamps and salt crystal bring to us through soothing light and color, the cleansing effect it provides for indoor air, and with powerful negative ions which have been studied enough to be known as beneficial, in a myriad of ways.” (http://bit.ly/eo8Ff0)
Of course, the pitch goes on and describes all the benefits, which are not exactly the point of this, so I won’t write them all here – feel free to check the link to a vendor selling these lamps, above. What the point IS, is the conversation that ensued… and I shall leave with whom I had the conversation out to protect the innocent…
Her: “Does it work?”
Me: “I choose to believe that it works. Does it matter?”
Her: “Yes.”
Me: “Why? If you believe that it works, isn’t that enough? If you believe that you will feel better, that the negative energy around you will be absorbed; if you trust in the renowned therapeutic effects, won’t you feel better? Is ‘psychosomatic’ really a ‘bad’ thing?”
Hmmm…
From Wikipedia:
Psychosomatic medicine is an interdisciplinary medical field studying the relationships of social, psychological, and behavioral factors on bodily processes and well-being in humans and animals. The influence that the mind has over physical processes — including (and I choose to read, “but not limited to”) the manifestations of physical disabilities that are based on intellectual infirmities, rather than actual injuries or physical limitations — is manifested in treatment by phrases such as the power of suggestion, the use of "positive thinking" and concepts like "mind over matter".
Hmmm….
I think I’m going to buy a few lamps…

Preparation
“Success will never be a big step in the future, success is a small step taken just now.” ~Jonatan MÃ¥rtensson~
It’s the first “work day” of 2011 I took the last few weeks “off”, literally. I took advantage of the down time and prepared myself mentally for the year that lies ahead. I feel as if I am ready for anything. I relieved myself of disappointment from unfulfilled expectations. I absolved myself from leftover guilt caused by not always doing what I said I was going to do. I meditated. I relaxed. I spent a lot of time thinking about what this year will bring. I believe this is going to be an amazing year…one filled with things by which to be amazed. It’s not just me… friends of mine have stated they also believe that this will be a year of great change. And, I for one, am very excited about that change. I’m not yet sure what it will look like; I do not even pretend to predict the future… but I have a plan.
I spent a lot of time physically preparing as well. I stretched a lot. I rested a lot. I laughed a lot. I also feel as if my physical space (my home office) is almost perfect. All I need now is a fresh coat of paint on the walls, and I am good to go. I love that my space is 100% conducive to accomplishment. It’s a “power” office complete with a desk fit for the CEO, a white board filled with roadmaps to success, a fountain, scented reed diffusers, “tokens of gratitude”, inspirational artwork made by my son, and of course, quotes everywhere to help me stay on track. There is a door I can close when I need to really focus, and speakers to play whatever music suits the mood. (Thanks Pandora!)
I am ready. And, I am excited by the possibilities. If you’re not feeling prepared for 2011, there’s still time! It’s never too late to take action!
“I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act; but I do believe in a fate that falls on man unless they act.” ~G.K. Chesterton~
Happy New Year! I wish you all great things in 2011 and beyond!

Preparation
“The most important day ever is TODAY.” ~~James Allen~~
…and “tomorrow is another day” ~~Scarlett~~
Preparation for having TODAY be the best day it can be may be difficult. I *swear* sometimes I spend half of my day preparing, and then feel like I wasted half my day! And even when I am prepared, there’s often some monkey-wrench thrown in to my great big plan. Even still, it really does help to prepare a bit ahead of time. You wouldn’t go into a formal business presentation without at least a few notes, would you?
I prepare my workspace (less clutter = fewer distractions), my to-do list, and my mindset. A few affirmations before bed and in the morning really help me feel ready to tackle whatever life throws at me.
And, when all else fails, know that it will all still be here tomorrow…

Monday: Preparation
“Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.” ~Frank Herbert, Dune Chronicles
On this, the first Monday of 2010, I am reminded to go back to basics. I am inspired once again by my preschooler, who before he unrolls his Aqua Doodle mat, he cleans up all the toys form the middle of the floor, asks for the water that he knows he will need for the “pen”, and finds the shapes that he plans to trace and sets them up beside him. He actually prepares his space to play with all the tools necessary to engage before he even sets out the mat. Not bad for 3 ½. While planning is certainly a part of preparation, when I first started this blog, and quoting about preparedness, it was really about setting up a work space, both mentally and physically.
As a coach I encounter so many who just don’t have an appropriate place to work. And, job hunting is working! So it is imperative that you have a distraction-free work zone that encourages positive energy and helps you stay motivated, and has all the tools you can possibly use right at your fingertips. If you don’t have that space at home, may I suggest going to the library?
Wherever you go, wherever the space, make sure it is set up such that you can truly focus (which is my tie in for tomorrow!), that it is well organized, and that you have minimized the possibility of being interrupted. Preparation is the first key to unlocking success.
